News

Feb 2011 news from Chapter President Walt Fertig: (posted 2/17/2011)

The next meeting of the Kane County chapter of the Utah Native Plant Society will be on Monday, 21 February 2011 (President's Day!) at 7 PM in the conference room of the Grand Staircase-Escalante NM visitor center (on Hwy 89 E of downtown Kanab, next to Walkers and Wendy's). Laura Fertig will be our speaker and will provide a travelogue of her recent expedition to the Himalayas in Nepal. Laura will tell of her adventures hiking (almost) to Mt Everest base camp, exploring a new culture, seeing some interesting plants, visiting a dog shelter called "kat" and getting a 35 pound engraved stone through customs at LAX. As always the meeting is free, and desserts will be served for socialization after the talk.

Our annual wildflower propagation workshop is scheduled for Saturday, 12 March 2011. Becca Leiberg, that dreadlock-wearing, North Dakota-bred, horticultural specialist from Zion NP will once again be on hand to provide instruction and gentle encouragement, as well as answer horticultural questions. Seed, soil, and containers will be provided for a low fee of $10 per participant. Space is limited in the Best Friends greenhouse, so please sign up in advance (contact me by email or phone - 644-8129).

We tentatively have our fall native plant sale planned for Saturday, Sept 11 at the Kanab farmer's market from 9-11 AM or so featuring the plants of Janett Warner's Wildland Nursery in Joseph, UT. More details later.
